Why choose a felt roof?

This type of flat roof still has a bad reputation in some places, but that perception is out of date.

Old types of roofing felt  were made of natural hessian commonly called 'rag fibre' felts, held together with an inferior grade of bitumen, all of which was prone to rotting, would become brittle with age, and would eventually crack. A 10 year life expectancy was pretty standard.

New types of SBS or APP bitumen have far better resistance to UV damage which prevents cracking. Modern felts are also reinforced with strong polyester fibres  running through the felt, which makes them  incredibly strong. This modern type of felt roofing system can be laid using either the old pour and roll technique or more typically these days using a blowtorch. Some people may believe that pour and roll indicates an old type of roof installation, but this is simply not the case. High tensile elastomeric polyester roofing felts can be laid this way to produce an excellent roof covering.

Typically a modern felt roofing system consists of a 3 layer system: starting with a perforated underlay to provide ventilation, then a 2mm or 4mm mid layer, then a thick 4-5mm cap sheet. The cap sheet can be finished in a mineral coating - no longer just green, but in grey, brown, black (and a variety of other colors) or plain, with a solar reflective paint, chippings, or even in a copper or aluminum foil. These three layers are laid overlapping so the middle of the next layer is directly over the lap of the previous layer, this ensures that the joints are all fully covered.

A well installed felt roof using modern materials is more cost effective than either GRP or EPDM, but in most cases lasts just a long.

In terms of lifespan, HT elastomeric felts are usually guaranteed to last 10 years, but can easily be relied upon to last 20-30+.
